Subliminal Hypnosis might be an impressive sound bite but what the hell does it mean? Taken literally, Subliminal Hypnosis would essentially be covert hypnosis? Just like subliminal, covert hypnosis has some heavy baggage its carrying around. Plus, it’s not what Subliminal Hypnosis is generally taken mean.
Subliminal Hypnosis hasn’t made it into the dictionary. Yet, it is headlining a personal enhancement courses and some rather dubious seduction techniques.
By unraveling the nuances of Subliminal Hypnosis you can see if it deserves a respectable place in your lexicon, in your life.

The Meaning of Subliminal Hypnosis
We know that Subliminal means hidden. It’s something that you perceive or effected by without being aware of it. In academic terms, Sub’liminal is something below the range of our perceptive threshold. It could be anything, from nanoparticles to sub-audible commands, from Sacred Geometry to Body Language. But what about hypnosis?
Subliminal is a relative term that can only be defined by the limits of your awareness.
The word Hypnosis comes from the Greek root Hypno, meaning; ‘Sleep’. So when we combine the two terms, Subliminal Hypnosis, wouldn’t it at least in one sense refer to dreaming?
“Persons under hypnosis are said to have heightened focus and concentration with the ability to concentrate intensely on a specific thought or memory, while blocking out sources of distraction.”
When I was just a kid just starting out in Junior High, I came across a book on hypnotism. I was fascinated by that sort of thing. So, I tried it out on my friends. You know what? It worked! For awhile this made me somewhat of a school yard celebrity. Kids were streaming over to my house just to get hypnotized.
Have you ever been hypnotized? You might not have had a hypnotic session, but you most certainly have been subliminally hypnotized. If you’ve ever driven home on auto pilot, you know, just kind of spaced out then all of a sudden your home, then you’ve been in a hypnotic state.
How about mindlessly following people out of an elevator on the wrong floor? You may have felt foolish, but probably didn’t realize that you were in a hypnotic trance.
Our short excursion into the meaning of subliminal Hypnotic conjunctive would be pretty lame if we didn’t crack open a dictionary. Unfortunately, dictionaries seem to choke on Hypnosis.
So, to keep you from choking on my writing, please do to skip over the section.
The Dictionary’s take on Hypnotism
The Oxford Dictionary defines hypnotism as: “the induction of a state of consciousness in which a person apparently loses the power of voluntary action and is highly responsive to suggestion or direction.”
The definition that the Encyclopedia Britannica is still a bit vague. Hypnosis is “a special psychological state with certain physiological attributes, resembling sleep only superficially and marked by a functioning of the individual at a level of awareness other than the ordinary conscious state.”

Subliminally Hypnotic States of Mind
The discovery of our Unconscious or Subconscious mind may have been revolutionary a hundred years ago, but it really doesn’t say much. I mean it’s kind of like saying there’s night and day, without considering the hours, minutes and seconds.
In fact, it really wasn’t much of a discovery at all, considering that the mystery traditions have known about many different levels of consciousness for thousands of years. But we’ll have to save that for another time, lest I digress.
You may have heard about the four states of mind: Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta, but around four years ago another level was discovered, Gamma.
These levels of consciousness are related to your brainwave frequencies which tells us how active your brain is. To briefly summarize them:
Beta is your normal waking level of conscious awareness. It’s the logical, alert state of mind that you’re currently using to read this passage. It’s also characterized by mental chatter and restlessness.
Hypnosis is impossible when you are in the Beta state of mind, but you can still be influenced by Subliminal Messages.
Alpha is a relaxed, day dreamy, mild trance level conscious awareness. It’s hard to tell the difference between Beta and Alpha because you’re still quite aware and able to think quite clearly.
Hypnosis is not only possible when your in the Alpha state of mind, it’s probable. You might be shocked to find out that every time you watch the television, your experiencing a mild form of hypnosis.
The media is filled with hypnotic devices that seamlessly intertwine with Subliminal Messages and play upon our subconscious associations.
Theta is a deeper trance level conscious awareness and is associated with light sleep and meditation. As you may be able to imagine, when you’re in the theta state of mind hypnosis can be therapeutic and very effective.
Delta is the slowest brain wave frequency and the deepest level of conscious awareness. It’s associated with dreamless sleep, deep trance and the higher forms of meditation.
Gamma the fastest brain waves are associated with heightened perception and increased mental abilities. These are probably what we could refer to as, the super-conscious state of mind.
When your in an hypnotic trance, the hypnotist can make suggestions that will bypass your critical faculty. In this altered state of perception, your subconscious mind is vulnerable, and much more susceptible to suggestions.
However, these suggestions don’t necessarily need to be subliminal. You may indeed be well aware of them, especially when your in an alpha trance state.
Subliminal Messages and Hypnosis both bypass our conscious resistance but they do it quite differently.
I don’t know of anyone using subliminal messages in conjunction with hypnotic therapy, but it does make sense, doesn’t it? Subliminal background music would in theory at least, reinforce hypnotic suggestions and make them more effective?
So, wouldn’t it be reasonable to conclude that Subliminal Hypnosis could be defined as subliminally enriched hypnotic therapy? It might not be perfect but, it is better than just another word for covert hypnosis.[/st_panel]
