Mask and shadow
If you are a psychologist (as well as a psychotherapist, psychiatrist, etc.), it is obvious that you must wear a mask of kindness and care. And you must wear it always and uncompromisingly in any contact with a client/patient. We know what we are talking about, because in years of our work, we have never allowed ourselves to get personal or settle scores — neither with “competitors” nor with clients — if something goes wrong.
This mask may initially be “difficult” for people who are involved in own ideas or other things, who have a quick temper, or who are emotional. Psychology is also about managing your feelings. You must be able to interact flexibly with your shadow without suppressing it — use the energy it gives you and the help it provides you. And pass on the skill of “playing” with the shadow to your client in order to win.
Empathy
Empathy is the most important quality for a psychologist. You need to have a sense of empathy and compassion, not just nod your head and pretend to understand when a client shares their thoughts with you (without remembering anything, with poor analytical skills).
Dao
We dare to apply the term “Dao” from eastern philosophy to the description of the plot. When you interact with your client, your path (your Dao) and the client’s path temporarily connect and intersect.
This is where a contradiction arises. If you are empathetic and know how to sympathize, then, of course, your client’s problems and difficulties in life will be felt by you, and they will influence you in one way or another.
It is important not to lose yourself in your clients’ problems, to maintain your focus and stability, to keep up a mask of kindness and concern, as well as optimism, and to lead your path to the best/happiest option for both (you and your client) — by solving their problems.
